This course is a detailed study of the gross anatomy of the head and neck and the external and internal morphology of the primary and permanent dentition. Emphasis is placed on structures directly affected by the practice of dentistry. Orofacial anatomy lecture topics include anatomic terminology, anatomic landmarks, the study of skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine, exocrine systems, facial spaces, and the spread of dental infections. Dental anatomy lecture topics include anatomy of the oral cavity, dental terminology, external and internal tooth anatomy, tooth nomenclature and numbering systems, individual tooth and root morphology, tooth eruption schedules, occlusion, and operative dentistry. In order to apply knowledge of head, neck, and dental anatomy to clinical dentistry, you will study anatomical models of the head, neck, oral cavity, and teeth, and extracted teeth.
